What are pharmaceutical errors?

Pharmaceutical errors may arise in two different forms:

    • Incorrect medication
    • Wrong dosage

When a pharmacist misinterprets a written prescription, prints the wrong dosage on the medicine bottle, fills the bottle with the wrong pills, or gives the patient the wrong amount of medicine, he or she has committed pharmacy error. The doctor may also carry out pharmaceutical error by prescribing the wrong medication or incorrect dosage for the patient.

Symptoms and Effects of Pharmaceutical Errors

Those who suffer from a pharmacy error may experience the following symptoms shortly after taking their prescribed medications:

    • Nausea/vomiting
    • Allergic reaction – hives, drug fever, anaphylaxis
    • Headaches and/or dizziness
    • Cramps
    • Paralysis
    • Loss of consciousness

Patients who are affected by pharmacy errors not only experience the side-effects of ingesting the wrong medication, but they also suffer from a delay in treatment for the original problem, as well. Therefore, victims will also experience consequences related to this form of medical malpractice in addition to any symptoms related to taking the incorrect medicine.
